The tracking tools we have in place were internally developed.
We have two tracking methods. The first is a &refer=ID tag I
can append onto any URL. The system creates a cookie on the
users machine and keeps track of their path through the site,
and what, if anything, they buy. This cookie expires in two weeks.
The second is our coupon system. We can create coupons and
tie them to specific product. A customer with a coupon code
can enter it at checkout, and it is automatically applied &
the value is subtracted form the total.
I can then go in and search by coupon and see how many times
it has been redeemed. For example, my google ad might include
"Use Coupon Code AD01 For $10 Discount." This coupon is used
only that ad, so if I lookup the redemptions of AD01, I know
how successful the ad has been.
I hope this helps you out--I know developing a system like
this is quite a job.. however, we employ server full time programmers.
Good luck, and if you any other questions about AdWords (I've got a ton
tips on keywords, ad copy, and such), feel free to email me.
