Hello all,
I wanted to quickly jump in and give a warning about using coupon codes
as a way to track an ad/keyword buy.
There are many sites out on the Internet who collect coupon codes and
post them on their own site. They use it as a way of gaining customer
loyalty... to keep them coming back to their site.
Jon, in your case this may not cause any problems, but if you are using
a code that can be reused just be aware that it could be taken and
placed somewhere you weren't expecting. This is most prevalent in the
CPA world where the coupon can generate a commission to the referring
site as well.
We have also created our own tracking system, which we use that is
similar to Jon's first method. It works in a similar fashion by placing
a pixel "bug" on a clients site and then that bug will catch the
campaign ID and then tell the client if a certain campaign resulted in a
lead or sale or some other action (whatever the client chooses). The
tracking can be used for search keywords, banner buys, email links...
pretty much any online marketing campaign. In the case of Google each
text ad carries its own Campaign ID so we can track back to the specific
text ad that referred an action.
