Brendan,

Conversion rates can't be just given as a figure. There are so many
factors that play a strong role in your conversion rate. A conversion
rate of a free 15 Mbytes e-mail address reaches sometimes 50%, while a
free download of a software designed for a special segment might not
exceed 5%, And to know your optimum rate you will need to do a small
homework.

The idea of this homework is pretty simple, a pop-up form that appear to
anyone leaving your website without downloading the software asking him:

Why didn't you download our FREE of charge software?
Then you give him multi choice answers addressing the most common
problems from your point of view (This list will be updated later based
on your customers' feedback). But make sure to include answers that
would address:
1) Trust Barrier
2) Website Usability Problem
3) False Targeted Customer
4) Bad sales copywriting and product description
5) Other than this

Make sure also to provide him with a text area where he can put his
extra comments with another area for e-mail and both are optional.

I used it before and 100% guaranteed to work and will help you in a
great way to analyze your problem free of charge and your role later on
will be finding out techniques to solve the most common problems.
