MODERATOR NOTE: Virus warning
Today I received an email message containing an attached virus
circle.gif.pif. The message had the subject line "online-ads digest:
March 05, 2003"
It appears that many of the people that have posted to the list
recently also received this virus infected message. The message and
the associated virus did not come from this list or our system.
The message references online-ads_at_ciceron.com as the "To:" address
(which is NOT the posting address to our list) as well a list
subscriber at pacemedia.com, whose computer is probably the one that
was distributing the infection. The headers on the message also
reference the domains leadforward.com and algx.net.
If you have posted to Online Ads in the past using your email
address, it means that subscribers to the list have received messages
containing your email address. My guess is that one of the list
subscriber's computer's got infected, and went about sending out the
virus to all the addresses that could be found on the computer or in
its address book. Why the virus picked "online-ads digest: March 05,
2003" as the subject line is a mystery to me, but it seems to be what
happened.
The list archives subsequent to September 1999 are not accessible to
web crawlers, and I have never received any spam at the email address
from which I post to this list.
Best,
