This debate, over whether blogs are messing up the results on Google, was a
hot topic in the blogosphere a few weeks ago. I collected a bunch of links
on the topic to a post I published here:
http://www.marketingfix.com/archives/time_to_improve_on_google.php#001402
Scroll down through the first part of the story (or read it), which is not
really related to that topic, but at the bottom you'll find links to
several stories exploring that exact question, including from the NYT and
the Guardian.
Personally, I think blogs can be useful to help you find what you're
looking for. True, Google may find a post that in and of itself is not the
answer to the question you're seeking, but it's likely that the Blogger may
link to something that is what you're looking for.
In the body of the post I link to above, I argue that there is still a lot
of room for Google to improve upon its listings, in particular by letting
you segment what type of content you want to focus on or exclude in your
search -- e.g., blogs, news sites, corporate sites, shopping sites, etc. I
don't think it should be strictly a question of including or excluding
blogs from all searches but giving searchers greater flexibility to tell
the system what they're looking for.
