Performance of AdSense ads?

I have a question about AdSense ads from the point of view of an
advertiser. While theoretically (and practically) a good idea
for a publisher, it might turn out to be not that good for and
advertiser:

- Google and its previous content partners were moderate to huge
sites. Most of them were caring some kind of branding power.

- AdSense ads are all over the Web, even on a small, quite
unknown sites with no reputation.

The question is: do you think it can affect performance of such
ads? Have you noticed change in performance of your ads before
AdSense introduction and after?

The reason I ask is: after several days of huge traffic (most of
which came from new AdSense sites) I had to switch off Google
Content ads at all - even though the people were real, they
didn't convert into any subscription / sign-up / purchase. I
haven't noticed any increase in the results (while the almost
doubled). And that was $100 a day over my regular expenditures.
I find this quite worrying.
