I do not agree with you on this one. You're right on the visitor's
part, they have accepted them as a part of the web. They are bad for
webmasters, since payment rates are very low for them, not because
they mix with content.
If you are planning to set up a service that will be earning money
with banners, it is very easy to design the site in such a way that
banners can be integrated.
As for free hosted sites, if you have some technical person on your
team, it is very easy for him to replace some sort of HTML tag like
<!-- banner -->
with the banner contents on webserver-level. That way your webmasters
can decide where the banner needs to come, so it won't really mess
with content.
