Thanks Cliff for opening this topic and for that seems to be useful
document (I just had a fast look at it till I read it all)

I was one of the earliest guys to use the News Alerts service, and the
problem I find it totally beneficial. The only thing that bothers me is
that Google didn't work it out on a form of account, that I can create
my own account and start putting the keywords I want to be receiving the
news about. For every keyword you like, you'll have to put your e-mail
address and the keyword and then reply back to their confirmation
request!! This is a step faraway from building user profiles.

Google also tried before to build a community service: Google Answers,
which for some reason a dead service now (I didn't research the reason
before).

For me, Google don't see themselves as a portal neither they are keen to
build a community. They've got everything that makes such a move
successful.

I still don't understand the reason, but of course they have something
in mind!
