If they succeed in attracting both Advertisers and publishers who can host
the search boxes and Link Directories, then Katie barr the doors. They are
already the single largest affiliate marketer in terms of reach. More sites
host an Amazon affiliate ad than any other. IF they offer these affiliate a
way to earn revenues from search activity, then they will enjoy a
competitive advantage in the affiliate space that will be unrivaled.

They are already pulling Google's Index and AdWords feed so they already
have the list of advertiser to start prospecting and they know what keywords
those advertiser are bidding on.

As a result they will be able to gather some valuable search data.

They also own Alexa and as a result have some amazing data on web traffic
patterns etc.

These combined sources of real time and incredibly relevant data is of
significant value to Amazon, and can be used to give them significant unfair
competitive advantage over their competitors.

It also seems logical to me that the evolution of the PPC space should take
the form of vertical or sub markets.

Amazon wants to be the Microsoft of Shopping (imho). They dam well might
succeed.

Btw I spend more money at Amazon.com than I do anywhere.
