GoogleAds and Web Marketing

I'm trying to determine if using GoogleAds makes sense for a service
business that provides information - aka information brokering,
and more particularly business and competitive intelligence research
using commercial online databases and the Internet.

I offer a one-year program by email and also teach a one-day seminar
"How to Find Clients: Market Planning and Marketing Strategies" targeted
to those in my field. I'm in the process of updating this seminar to
include Web marketing basics.

Since the people I train are up to their eyeballs in learning and keeping
on top of the technology necessary for their businesses, marketing is
extremely challenging.

In an effort to upgrade my seminar - I've been teaching it
since 1988 - I'd like to incorporate some very practical
Web marketing techniques. I'm looking at what can be done
by those on small budgets - and what's effective. The vast
majority of these business are one-person businesses providing
a service. I encourage them to think in terms of products.

I'm trying to find out if they should spend time with GoogleAds or
outsource to professionals for assistance on this, or for other web
marketing strategies. As an aside, I talked to colleague who
spent a good deal of time on search engine optimization but found
it to much of a time drain after a while. Another colleague used
GoogleAds briefly (he works in a niche market) and got some hits
but not those he wanted. I urged him to reevaluate his key words and
continue his efforts.

I'd like to know more about professional services and sources
to refer my colleagues and students to but at the same time, I'm
looking for tips for efforts they could do on their own. I also want to
give them a realistic and balanced picture of what this is all about.

There are hundreds of sources out there and I've started looking
around and interviewing people on this subject. Down the line,
I plan to write an article for an association newsletter
(http://www.aiip.org) and am happy to include, quote, and cite you
(others) once I can figure out what's applicable for this particular group
of folks. I'm an information industry journalist as well as researcher,
trainer, and teacher.

If it's impossible to spend the time themselves because it requires too
much of a learning curve, I'd like to encourage them
to budget for assistance. I'd like to know what they can expect
with regard to costs and what works, what doesn't, what they
may be able to do on their own with some effort and study,
and words of wisdom from the experts. In essence, I'm
trying to introduce a group of already pioneering professionals
to a vast new world. If willing to be interviewed on this subject,
please let me know.

Thanks in advance for listening and for your advice.
