I advise my clients to build their own lists, and do everything they can to
avoid buying one.

In order to build lists quickly, we capture email addresses from orders and
catalog requests in addition to site visitors 'opting in' to receive product
updates and coupons. As long as we can show some contact or relationship
between our entity and the person who receives our mail, we have a much
better rate of email list retention, click-through, purchases, and we avoid
the problem of people submitting us to the "black spammer lists".

So how to we build the lists in the first place? We drive traffic to the
site with lots of online advertising. And the site itself is compelling
enough to prompt some action from site visitors.
