Partnering with other Sites, Take 2

A couple of weeks ago I posted a question about partnering and soon it was
obvious, based on the responses that I had not been specific enough in
my request for info. Thank you for your attempts, to say the least.

Anyway, what I want to do is exchange links and banners and such with
other sites that would be (of course) mutually beneficial to both parties.
What I was wondering is if there are as list of guidelines or maybe some
things to look out for? Are there standard "exchange banner" sizes that
sites use? DO these go on the front page or a links page or elsewhere on
the site?

I've been around the web once or twice, but not in an advertising or
marketing sort of way. We're getting traffic, but not as many sales as we'd
like. If there are insights as to places to go and sites to read up on that
would help me to understand marketing on the web more thoroughly, please
respond.

I have enjoyed reading the debates and the info has already helped.

Thanks in advance for a nice list that isn't overwhelming in size.
