I'll chime in on this one also ... I started my 5th newsletter a couple
years ago. The first 7 months we spent $1,095 per month buying banner ads
(750,000 @ $1.46 CPM). The revenues for these first 7 months rose from
$2,800 the first month to $9,400 in the 7th month (we then started
increasing the ad spend). Of course over the last couple years we have
continued to increase our ad spend for this newsletter and it is now
generating well over a half million dollar annual run rate (over and above
ad costs) and we expect to have it over a million dollar annual run rate by
this time next year.
So, whoever started this topic, don't let the rather small initial budget
stop you from proceeding. Spend it wisely and let the revenues that build up
over time bring you to the next step.
Whether you should go with "advertising" or "PR" as Julie states ... I'd say
spend the money where YOU KNOW how to best spend it. Personally, if I spent
it on "PR", I can guarantee that I'd have terrible results because I don't
know how to buy that type of thing. On the other hand, I have lots of
experience buying "advertising" and know what results to expect on various
ad buys.
