That comment, and your others on the placement of Google Adwords on pages
causing them to be ineffective make me wonder whether Mr. Day actually
advertises with Google, and if he has a site that has lost ranking because
it was overoptimized and/or had little content.
We advertise in Google Adwords and we also get considerable traffic from the
generic searches. We haven't seen any unusual change in traffic, and
little change in where we come up (often on the first page or Google search
results) for keywords that are important to our site visitors.
We did have a slight drop in traffic the last week in November, but that's a
normal seasonal variation for us. I've been running small business sites
online for 15 years, and Thanksgiving week is always one of the slowest in
the year for our site.
Furthermore, Google adwords do produce results for us even when they appear
on the right sides of pages. We've found that when our ads are well-written,
that our Google Adwords campaigns bring targetted traffic.
But the other thing that I think people have to remember is that if you are
running a business, you need to budget for advertising. While getting free
search engine traffic is nice, you can't rely on free. If you want a
sustainable business, you must include advertising and marketing costs in
your planning and pricing.
