I think there is a different spin to put on their reason for doing the
updates.
They are planning an IPO and want to show that they can increase revenue
and be more attractive to investors. Any time a company moves towards an
IPO, they tend to do crazy things all in the name of getting the strike
price higher. The higher the better since the investment bankers,
current stock owners, and other 'friends' all stand to make a lot of
money.
You and me buy the stock, it goes down, and if the company was
mismanaged or did practices that are not legal, then lawsuits ensue and
the new stock holders are left holding the bag.
I know this is a pessimistic point of view but it is reminiscent of the
.COM era where this happened all the time. I have seen news articles
suggesting that maybe a new .COM era is starting where the companies
involved in the IPO's are actually making money.
This is true of Google, but I can no longer afford their AdWords. They
can blow my budget in a day, and because I am small, the ads usually end
up in weird places that don't do me much good.
Now that the playing field has been unleveled, they probably see that
the only way to maximize profits and boost their revenues is to increase
the AdWords revenue for keywords that are underperforming.
