On Overture, I regularly see big companies paying more than is commercially
viable. These companies have huge advertising budgets and although
they might not be able to show cost effective ROI, at least they are
shutting off access to their competitors by occupying the top slots.

If it happens on Overture, it'll happen on Adwords too.
Google will be crying crocodile tears over the fact that you can no
longer compete on the Internet. By the time Google's service is seen
to be degraded by the vast majority of their users (searchers) the
flotation will have come and gone and the shareholders will then be
taking the risk of people deserting Google in their millions.
You and I may be out of business by then.
