There are a number of solutions out there. I have found the best to be those
from Six Apart. They offer Moveable Type (MT) which one downloads and
installs on a co-hosted server, unless they have their own server. The
commercial license costs a one time fee of $150. If you are unfamiliar with
setting up script on a data base, Six Apart will do it for a very reasonable
fee of $40. Best hosting service I have found for MT is Total Choice
Hosting.
Six Apart also offers a Web based version of MT called TypePad. TypePad does
not require any download and is hosted by Six Apart. It costs a monthly
subscription fee of $5 to $15/month. MT, and not TypePad, offers a search
function and the ability to push posts to subscribers by email in addition
to RSS (real simple syndication) which both offer.
In each case, if you are using for professional marketing impression it's
nice to have someone do a professional looking template rather than the
default ones you can create with TypePad or MT.
Benefits of blogs:
* Search engines like Google are looking for keywords in title tags and body
text. Just keying in relevant content into blog will give you keywords in
body. Making smart use of keywords in title of post will generate good
keywords in title tags.
* Search engines are looking for regularly updated sites. Posting to a blog
is darn near as easy as writing an email. So sites based on blog software
are updated much more often than traditional sites.
* Search engines are looking for incoming links to sites. Blogs on similar
topics often link to each other. In addition because of the relevant content
on a blog that's often updated, site publishers often link to blogs. Linking
and the previous two items push a blog to the top of search engine results
and blogs usually out perform traditional Web sites, which Web sites spend
large dollars on search engine optimization (seo). Blogs get results with
out expensive seo.
* Blogs push content to users by syndication by RSS & email -- very valuable
for customer mindshare, especially with so much spam by email causing people
to opt to receive content by RSS as opposed to email newsletters
* Ease of publication -- big deal as anyone can easily add content and drop
into appropriate topic category.
Enough rambling..
