Hi Dave:
I think the starting point is to check out your competition. They'll
have media kits available on the site where they show off their user
profile (aka demographics) and talk about their rates. You can use that
as a guide for estimating your value to your advertisers.

Another very popular model (and easy model) is to join the Google
Adsense program (https://www.google.com/adsense/). Here Google pays you
to post their 'content'-related ads. You load up a javascript into your
html which integrates Google ads into your website. You get paid by
Google whenever your visitors click their ads.
