As the person who actually published the Fireclick data, I can tell you
exactly how they determined it. Now while it is not my preferred
definition it is standardized across all their clients. The data is
based on buying session/total sessions. I would prefer to see
orders/unique visitors, however it is not the way they do it. I am
working now with several organizations (under the auspices of the newly
formed Web Analytics Association-more details to come) to try and
produce a worldwide study based on definitions provided by Jim Sterne
(my partner in WAA) and myself.
On another note there are over 1100 variables that affect conversion
rates on an ecommerce site.
