Close rates for online subscriptions

Does anyone happen to have an generally accepted close rate (rule of
thumb) they could share with me for companies that sell online
subscriptions via telephone?
 
I am thinking in general terms--for benchmarking purposes. For
example, if your job is closing business and all you do is follow-up on
leads, how many do you have to follow-up on before you get a sale? And
once you know that, how does that compare with the companies you compete
with?
It seems reasonable to think that there is a some sort of number out
there (whether it's specific to my industry or not).
