I've been around the track, including getting hosed (but eventually
recovering from) CardServiceInternational. I now use a company
called Nelix (www.nelix.com/robfrankel) which is smaller but
notoriously secure and reasonable.

For the record, I've found that the branding really does work: for
lower, more common purchases, people use VISA. For slightly
higher-end, Mastercard and Discover. For high end stuff, American
Express.

Also, some of these merchants have promotions with steeply discounted
fees for the first year. AMEX has one where you only pay $5 a month
for ALL transactions for your first year.....after that, you go to
their normal schedule.
