The *best* option for accepting payment will depend on your needs.

Usually the main benefits of 3rd party payment systems like paypal
is convenience, no setup/monthly fees and it's rather easy to
start accepting payments. PayPal offers some nice features but
keep in mind, not *everyone* has a paypal account.

There are many benefits to setting up your own merchant account as
well, including a more professional image IMO.

If you are using a software (like a shopping cart), You might also
want to check what payment methods it supports. Also consider
that some services offer you a "shopping cart" or other tools for
accepting payments.
