Though he made some valid points, I have to disagree with John's
conclusions. If there is any reason why this list has been less active,
it is because it has been successful enough that all those who read it,
especially the earlier members, are probably too busy doing online
marketing (guilty as charged :-). However, we still need this list. To
be honest with ourselves, we all still have a lot to learn. Even after
35 years in the business, I have learned much from this list. Yes,
online marketing still follows the underlying rules of good marketing in
general, but the implimentation is rather different, and is a moving
target that changes from website to website. If we are brutally honest
with ourselves, we have to admit we don't yet know everything about
online marketing. What we know is how to do the research we need to do
in order to find out. We are much better at it, and there are many books
out there, but we have much to learn, as evidenced by the fact that most
online businesses are not successful. Perhaps most importantly, given
that evidence, those of us who have learned something about online
marketing have much to share. Sharing our experience is essential for
the internet, for us, to grow as both businesses, as marketing people -
and just as people.
