Cheryl is right on with the use of static pages and the placement of
those pages within the site. We provide ecommerce sites and the number
one problem when people come to us is their dynamic pages that contain
their products are rarely spidered if at all. This means that a
company's website that may have 500 products are completely missing out
on the ability for users to find their pages.

For those that are not familiar with what a dynamic page is, it's a page
that is created from a database. Let's say you see an online flower
shop, you may see a dynamic URL with something like
/category_id=2productid=6.asp. This means nothing to a search
engine.
There search engines have trouble with pages like that. Instead, you
will want to have a page that may look like /white_wedding_roses.html

You either need to create regular static pages for each dynamic page
(which can be way too overwhelming) or get a shopping cart that does it
for you.
