Keyword lists in metatags

Such great feedback on the question regarding structuring pages for search
engines that I'd like to pose another SE-related question.

For years, we've handled our keywords lists with commas between phrases,
generally avoiding single keywords except for ones that were industry jargon
or technical terms. Our clients continue to do well with that approach.
I've recently heard that things have changed and it's better to create
keyword lists with a space between each individual word to let the search
engines create their own phrase combinations.

Anyone have some insight into what's going on? Thanks, Jan
