Brian,

Generally people that have the kind of problem that you are describing
are missing backlinks. A backlink is a link from another website to
your website. Search engines want to find your website on their own
(yes, submission to search engines is of no real use).

So you can search the internet for directories and submit your website
to those for inclusion in the directory. There are free and paid
directories out there, just have to search for them.

Then you can exchange links with other websites that are related to
yours. Another option is to submit articles to websites willing to
publish them. In the signature of your article they generally place a
link to your website.

Links are very important. If you´re not known, search engines won't
care. And they look at how well you are known by looking at who links
to you.
