There are tons, did you even look? Check the footer of message boards that
do the same thing, such as www.sitepoint.com/forums (most message boards
indicate the name of the software used in the footer. i.e. "Powered by
...")

www.vbulletin.com is very popular
www.invisionboard.com is my personal favorite

Changing ad placements will probably involve modifying the "templates"
