Re: Economics of selling ads on a retail web site
Hello Joshua,
Your offering ad space (web) to potential advertisers will depend
heavily on what you can offer them. Any potential advertiser will want
to know demographics about your visitors. Ages, sex, income, home
owners, education, purchasing habits, and so on. So presenting numbers
of unique visits will most likely not be enough to entice potential
advertisers.
The key to attracting potential advertisers is to create a win / win
situation. For instance; a person who markets soy candles might have an
interest in your site. The candle maker could be even more enticed by
your demographic information of your visitors if statistics stated:
female, age 24-52, home owner, 25-25k a year, some college, shops online
frequently. This would be an ideal demographic to present to create
that win/win situation as it would be likely your visitors would have an
interest in your advertiser.
How you go about retrieving this information is up to you. Opt in news
letter, survey or a market analysis based on general trends of web
surfers who relate to your product.
I rarely recommend to clients to place banner ads on their site, as I
always say "why give your visitors an exit". There are though
conditions were as both parties can gain from the relationship.
Best Wishes,
