Tracking Ad conversion

I am new to this list and have watched it for a while. As folks have
been asking questions regarding various online ad strategy and
performance I thought it might be interesting to know what
people are using to track online campaign success and conversion.
It seems to me that one of the caveats of the web is that with a
good analytics software - you can tell pretty quickly how effective
the campaign is or if there is a good ROI.
