Eight months seems like a long time to wait for SEO
optimization results. I do agree that backlinks (links from other websites
to your website) are important, I believe the importance of outward links
that you create on your own website to related websites are not weighed so
heavily by the search engines. The reason being that you can easily fake or
in effect "spam" the subject matter of your website by including many links
unrelated to your website topic. Say, for example, your website is about
Croatian language dictionaries. There might not be many browsers searching
for that topic, so you decide to include twenty links on your front page to
USC football. To prevent searchers getting your website back in the #1
position returned for USC football, when your subject matter is really
Croatian languages, the search engines do not weigh your outward links very
heavily.
The main advantage of having many back-links to your site is
that your site will tend to get "spidered" (or re-indexed and re-ranked) by
search engines more often. This is because as each search engine "spiders"
various sections of the NET, it follows the links found in the spidered
sites, and spiders the sites that are linked to as well. So the more "areas"
of the Net where a link to your site is found, the more often your site will
get "spidered".

Phil Kaufman
