Re: David Yancey's post, I have to take exception to the statement that,
"very few companies will benefit from SEO." Your conclusion is based only
on the math that dictates the results for the most competitive terms. A
good SEO consultant will help identify a broad space of keywords to target,
from the least competitive (but profitable) to the most competitive (when
reasonable). There is a lot of money to be made targeting two-, three-, and
even four-word phrases. I completely support the strategy of balancing SEO
with other methods of acquiring traffic, including those offline. I
adamantly support the philosophy that a site's visitor conversion rate must
be understood (and improved if necessary) prior to investing in any form of
traffic generation. But a look at the search phrases extracted from the Web
logs from most sites will convince you that the number of ways Web users
think of to search for the same products and services is limitless.
