Sarah, we launched our Eventix.ca a couple of years ago, haven't done a
single bit of web optimization on the site - it has very little content that
can be spidered, yet we are ranked number 2 on google for 'canada online
event registrations'

The only thing we've done is the typical manual adding of our site to the
search engines.

Someone suggested to me that perhaps its the lack of 'trickery' on our part
that has ranked us high. Some sites get blacklisted due to this.

Based on this experience, I would say your source is correct.
