Hi Jeff,
We work with a number of people that do essentially what you're describing
- which seems to be a licensing situation. In most cases that I've seen,
the writer(s) will charge a minimum fee per client that uses it plus a
surcharge based on the number of recipients. To figure what you need to
charge depends on the 'opportunity cost' - i.e. how much you could be
earning by spending your time on other projects. Make sure that is
accounted for in the base rate and then the surcharge is gravy.
Will you also be responsible for the actual distribution of the content? If
so, then you'll likely need a customized delivery system (to deal with the
issue of different end clients needing to be able to update their data,
different subscription forms feeding in and different header information
being used). Again, this is something you'll need to build into your rates.
What I'd suggest you do is see if you can survey the decision makers at the
organizations who would use this. Find out if they'd want to use the
service, how often they'd want the newsletters going out, would they want
customization done, and how much they'd be willing to pay for it. This will
help you get a better idea if it is actually a viable endeavor before you
invest too much time and energy in it.
Hope this helps!
