Recommendations for online advertisers

I am interested in developing a list of activities that online advertisers
are/should be doing online. Do you have any suggestions? Anything from
budget considerations and creative ad formats to tracking and search engine
optimization. If you either make such recommendations to clients or make
these decisions for your own company, I would especially appreciate hearing
from you. If you have any resources or good articles, please point me in
that direction.
