Mobile phone marketing has been a major focus of mine lately. Advertising
and marketing via mobile phones is still very new, especially in the US. But
in the near future it is expected to be huge. I went to a conference last
week in which the following companies spoke about marketing and
advertising via mobile phones:
-Enpocket helps market brands via mobile phones: http://www.enpocket.com
-Graphico New Media does too. They are located in the UK:

-Go2 is a mobile pay-per-click search engine. They specialize in finding
businesses near your location via your phone's GPS.:

The mobile phone industry is really fragmented right now with all of the
different carriers, so I haven't heard of any ad networks yet. Only a
small percentage of people browse wireless internet webites (WAP sites)
right now. They may go off portal to someplace like Yahoo! via a link
from the carrier's (Sprint, Cingular, Verizon, etc.) portal, but very few
people know to type a web address with their keypads. So most people
download content and browse within the carrier's portal, which is
controlled by the carrier.
There are many restrictions to marketing via text messages, but you
probably have already guessed that.
There is also a do-it-yourself type service called Bango. They work with
some carriers to allow you to offer free and paid content:
