email marketing - software or service?

Hello all,

I am helping to develop an approach to recruiting
students and also to maintaining industry/alumni
contacts. Some of this involves email contact and I
seeking some opinions about the best software and/or
service for a light duty scenario. We might send
roughly 1000 emails in an average month and do not
want to create an HTML heavy mailer.

It seems like a hosted service might be best. We
definitely want to be able to personalize the
greetings, do split run tests, and track opens,
bounces, forwards etc. It should also run with an
Excel database.

Does anyone have an opinion on a brand or service or
even on other important criteria we should use to make
a choice?
