That, in my opinion, depends greatly on the type of business your in
and the type of buyer you're trying to drive.

We own 250~ domain names and use them for specifically the purpose
you've described and have excellent success with that method, plus the
cost is very low since the bulk of the domains weren't registered in the
first place. We have just begun purchasing existing domains, thats a
different story and something to think much harder about since the cost
of the domains in question could be quite substantial.
