To take this point a little further, has anyone looked if it pays to become
a domain registrar yourself, just to get your own domains very cheap? ICANN
charges 25 cents per domain, while registrars charge around 8 dollars per
.com domain I believe. The registrar's application fee to ICANN is 2500
dollars (http://www.icann.org/registrars/accreditation-process.htm), so if
you own 400+ domains is it worth it?

And this brings me to another point. I believe some people make money from
"ad farms" (if this term has any merit). For example,
http://whois.webhosting.info/66.118.136.67 reveals that 490342 domains are
hosted under the IP 66.118.136.67. I am not sure what is happening exactly,
but I guess all these domains are used to generate ad dollars, and I think
that for a cost of 25 cents a year for each, they must bring in something. I
am not sure what the advertisers think about it though.

Btw does anyone know if Google AdSense for domains and their parking server
Oingo.com is also used for such purposes?
