Email marketing programmes

OK.

Being one in the online space since a long time, it is an embarassing
question to ask.

But what the heck, when I have access to this forum, it is better to ask and
bask in the 'knowledge', then be egoistic and think I know a bit.
OK, a friend of mine trying to set up a small business on the web from home
asked me this:

"I have tried using a few email clients to market my services and products
(they keep changing with time) to my email list. The problems I face are:
1) My domain got blocked by a few mail service providers - even though all
these people are on my opt in list. To top it, I had sent very few mails-
probably around 1000 mails- and I faced this.
2) The mail service did not give me any data on mails sent, opened, clicked
on a URL and so on (No good stats)
3) I do not have a mail server- just an internet connection, a mailing list,
some good products/newsletter material, a domain name and a web site hosted
on a shared space -bought on a web server.

Is there a service you can recommend that can allow me to address all these
issues?"

Well, I did not have an answer at that point of time.

Now- I know of a few mail services that can allow him to do all this and
more, but when it comes to something in the range of say 50-100 USD (or
lesser/pay per use/minimum risk), I do not really have an idea. There a lots
of programms on offer, but which one is tried, tested for small businesses,
and recommended by experts, is what I want to know. If there is any online
service that provides an interface and allows to do all this, even that is
welcome- just that the database sharing might be an issue with these
services.

His mailing list is not too large as of now (say max 5000 mails to be sent-
2-4 times in a month)- and I do not see his list growing suddenly any which
ways.

Experts? Users? Trend watchers? Anyone?
