You stated that "there is no central brand that Cliff is trying to grow
here" and that O-A is "pretty
much a product." Now, it is true that my expertise is in other aspects
of the online industry. However,
I have generally definied an effective "brand" as being an intangible
and creating a certain amount of
credibility for the products delivered under it's banner. O-A, to me,
has always done this.
I have considered the product to be the individual digests or posts
which deliver the audience to the
advertisers and the dialogue and information to us, the users.
To me, the overall group I would have considered more in the community
context and ultimately
being completely about branding and not about the product.
From my impressions, Cliff is indeed tryinig to grow a Brand around O-A
(although currently I don't see
any definitive strategy used). And, although it is certainly not
associated with the revenues that we
are used to in other parts of the industry, I think that this mission
has been very effectively accomplished.
Growth however, is dependent upon two things - an availible pool of
resources to grow from and an effective
method of tapping into those resources. In our case, we - those who
post - provide the pool of resources.
It is the second part of the equation that I percieve Cliff's question
as dealing with.
O-A has a TON of credibility and a very worthy audience. And all of us
continue to subscribe because of it.
However, it is true that it doesn't have the sheer volume that it has
had in the past. And, perhaps, this is because many are getting their
primary information from other sources.....
What are your overall impressions?
Is there anything that you see that Cliff could do to enhance the mission
of O-A?
