You may want to give www.revver.com some consideration. I'll let you read up
on their website than try to explain their system.

In my experience eCPM rates for general entertainment sites are rather poor.
Self-serve advertising services such as adbrite, adengage, etc work better
than adsense especially if you have considerable traffic.
