The hurdles Google faces with click fraud, with their 58% share of
online advertising, and their developing business trust issues (or
maybe they're just PR issues?), are what is contributing to the
huge conflict of interest inherent in this debate. Whether we trust
Google or not is beside the point - business self-interest issues
are implicit.
Which makes things hard for Google, who I love, trust and use every
single day.
Obviously they're not going to bury click fraud, or deceptively
hide its influence. But how they manage this issue, both in the
media and SE industry (and the technology sector, as always) is a
chess match for them to be sure. Working collaboratively with other
SEs and third-party organizations is going to be critical. And how
they manage those relationships is revealing of how they're
approaching the problem.
