Adsense tends to display the highest paying ads first, so creating
smaller ad blocks definitely helps hit the best click pricing for
publishers. Not sure about YPN but it may work similarly.

I sent Cliff an email off-list w/ my input, which echos other
thoughts here. Using adsense or YPN on a site in your niche is
tough because of the sophistication / ad blindness of the target
audience. And some may not agree, but I feel too many contextual
ads from these networks can drastically reduce credibility and link
worthiness of a site.

If it were my own site I'd remove the contextuals except for a
small spot at the bottom. Focus on getting advertisers instead -
you should be getting decent traffic from those rankings. You're
probably more likely to acquire link credentials without all the
YPN. Getting links probably isn't a huge priority for o-a.com
anymore, but authority and credibility are super important
*especially* with organic searches coming in. Most people will have
never heard of you before and you want to create some loyalty
there, not drive them away w/ tiny content blocks riddled with ads.

Another idea is to incorporate a new left navigation design with
adsense below the main links. Then add a classy greyed-out
"sponsors" tag to differentiate the ad blocks from your main nav
links. You'd have to remove the image links and take out the black
sidebar. ... matter of fact, just redesign the whole thing :-)
