Re: Sudden drop in Google Ad Revenues?
Fred Showker asked, "Has anyone else experienced a sudden drop in
Google ad revenue?"
My average eCPM (effective CPM, or effective cost per 1,000 adviews)
for April 2007 is about 5% less than the average eCPM over the prior
three years.
In the past, I've found Google ad revenue to be reasonably steady
(for a site with relatively consistent traffic and visitor
demographics) -- though there have been some noticeable seasonal
variations and occasional "hiccups."
My most significant observation is that AdSense does not perform well
during "surges" (e.g. if your site normally draws 10,000 visitors per
day, and then suddenly receives 100,000 visitors per day for a few
days, your eCPM may drop significantly). And of course, for
moderate- and low-traffic sites, the eCPM will vary wildly from day
to day, but averaged over a week or month, my eCPM usually varies
only by 10% to 20%.
I also notice that my eCPM can shift upwards or downwards by 10% or
more, based on the activities of a single advertiser (it's unclear if
these campaigns are pay-per-click or site-based CPM campaigns).
