I have created special pages to attract hits. See the files listed at the
bottom of my page at http://www.ca-probate.com/filelist.htm

These "special pages" use repetetive phrases ("estate planning estate
planning..." or "probate probate probate...") to generate hits on certain
engines. When the page is loaded, it automatically loads my home page. I
don't use this repetition on my actual home page because certain search
engines put pages with repeated terms at the END of the results list.

But nothing can guarantee #1 position because, first, the search engines are
designed and changed over time to discourage trickery, and second, if you
find a technique that works, someone else will copy it. Also, beware of
creating pages that generate false hits (e.g. "sex sex sex . . . ") --
people will resent you for it.

Also, if your product or service is limited in some way, use the modifiers
your clients will use. There are a zillion web pages about estate planning
and probate out there, so I make sure I include the word "California" in my
pages so it will match a search for "California AND probate" -- also
consider using your county name if that's relevant, or the name of an
adjoining city or county if your customers are there (e.g. perhaps your page
about your Berkeley vacuum cleaner repair shop should come up in a search
for "Oakland AND vacuum").

Finally, consider doing things that will discourage the "wrong" people from
visiting your site. I use the word "California" in my site a lot in my
title fields since I don't want to invite non-Californians to my site. And
be aware of words that will bring false hits (e.g. my practice is "estate
planning" but I avoid using the term "real estate" on my pages because that
will bring the pages up in searches for "real estate AND law" which is not
my specialty).
