Ray,
If you are using LISTSERV, which is a trademarked name of L-Soft
international, and the list is a non-confidential mailing list, it will
automatically appear in LISTSERV's LISTS database. Since LISTSERV is
commercially supported software, this database is updated daily while, from
what I have heard, the others mentioned below are not as current for they are
manually updated.
We have a search facility on our web site, The CataList,
http://www.lsoft.com/lists/listref.html, which allows you to do a key word
search for a list by list name and description, by host name, host country,
even by size of the list. Once again, it is only for LISTSERV lists.
In the next release of LISTSERV (in a few weeks), subscribers will also be able
to do "database" key word searches of the archives of the lists through an HTML
interface. It will be the prerogative of the host site and list owner to make
this tool available to their subscribers. A working example of this can be
found at http://www.lsoft.com/flight-800.html, which is a goodwill list that
we started for the Flight 800 disaster. I would appreciate any comments on
this search tool, at your leisure. Thanks.
John
