As long as you raised the subject ... it certainly does. We've been having
a lot of fun working with a new client for which we will be launching a new
web site and running a PR campaign later this week -- they make
customized/personalized watches. Their site launch and promotional
campaign is centered around Web Watches, which feature a company's logo and
URL (remind your clients that its time to visit your web site...).
We originally thought the primary venue that the client would sell the
watches would be by striking deals with other web site owners, so we are
currently in the process of finding high profile web sites that will
feature web watches for sale with that site's logo and URL. Our client's
program offers web site owners the opportunity to earn a steady commission
selling the watches that publicize their web site. We have tested this
concept with some success selling Year 2000 watches on our year2000.com
site. (It probably depends on the site. My staff loves their Tenagra
watches, but would someone else visiting Tenagra's site buy one if we
offered them for sale? Probably not. It may need to be for a site that is
very popular with the general public in order to sell significantly.)
We have also been surprised by some of the responses we have had. We
designed and purchased a Web Watch for another of our client's sites and
gave it to him as a gift when we launched his site. The good will it
brought us was tremendous. Then he ordered a dozen more for his
colleagues, and inquired of buying another 500 for his entire sales force
(which has not yet done). The real market for this product may in fact be
as web site promo items for the press, management, sales force, and online
contests rather than direct sales to the public as we had originally
anticipated. We'll see.
