strategy for selling web pages

Hi,

I am new to the list, so I thought that I would introduce myself. My
name is Bill Suboski, I am 33 years old, self-employed, and I have been
writing computer programs for eighteenn years, in a variety of languages and
on a variety of platforms.
I first got onto the net in mid-December of 95. I had been turned
off by the hype, but was pleasantly surprised by what I found, a giant
library, full of weird and strange things.
In the time since I got on, I have been trying to sell web pages. I
live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and the local market is BAD, BAD, BAD.
People don't understand what the Internet is, are reluctant to even
investigate, all manners of reasons. So far, my revenue has come not from
selling web pages but from custom HTML (which frankly bores me).

In the spring, I wrote a program that would build real estate web
listings from an ASCII data file. I am currently hoping to use this as a
prospecting tool. I have offered the package as freeware on one of my web
pages. For now, I am not so much interested in revenue as in establishing a
steady stream of repeat visitors.

I am hoping that:

1) Some of those surfers will hire me to do custom work;

2) Because the software is still being developed, people will return
to the page, so that if I do charge for an improved version, or for other
software, I will have a good client base going;

Point 2 requires further clarification. On my web page, I am using
The URL-minder service. I am surprised that more web pages don't. it seems
ideal for sales listing pages.
Briefly, the URL minderassociates a list of email addresses with an
URL. The bot then periodically checks the page at that URL, and if it
detects a change in the page, sends notifying email to all addresses in the
list. This means a surfer will not waste time revisiting a page that hasn't
changed, but the surfer will not miss an update either.

I welcome any comments. I am looking for input, opinions, criticisms
as to my strategy. BTW, I didn't mean to butt this is in in the middle of a
discussion, but I tried to be gentle. Thanks for your attention, peace, live
long and prosper,

Bill Suboski
