Here is a sample line from a server log:

camelot.sinclair.edu - - [17/May/1996:09:09:03 -0800] "GET
/info/whatsnew.html HTTP/1.0" 200 34762

Here is what the server log records:

- remotehost The name of the machine requesting the file
- rfc931 This feature not widely used
- authuser Login ID, if Login ID & Password are required
- date Local time, including difference from Greenwich Mean Time
- request In quotes: Method, File, Protocol
- status The server status code; status code 200 represents a
successful request
- bytes The number of bytes transmitted

So, to see if a banner has been fully loaded, one would check:

- request Look for name of the file
- status code Look for code 200
- bytes Look for the known size of the file

Each action taken by the server is recorded as a "hit", including graphics,
re-directed requests, and sometimes even "File Not Found" errors. I don't
know of any reason to ask about (or care about) the number of "hits" in a
server log -- anyone know of a good purpose for asking for a "hit count"?
