Ad charges at subscription sites

Now that it is becoming increasingly common to require that users pay
to access quality content at WWW sites, the question about ad rates
at these subscription sites arises. Although the subscription sites
may have somewhat LOWER traffic after they start charging than when
they were free, the group who is viewing the site is presumably more
motivated to visit (and revisit) and absorb the content in order to
get their money's worth. In the same way as subscription magazines
and newspapers can command higher ad rates than the freebie community
paper, it would seem natural to charge higher rates at these
subscription sites. However, so far any formulas I've seen for web
advertising are tied almost exclusively to hits/number of visitors.
I'm therefore wondering if anyone has experience with this new type
of advertising.
